Ninety-two teams battle for Governor’s Cup at Capitol City Showdown
By Josh Curmi
Ninety-two teams from Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Canada converged in Lansing on January 15-18 to compete in the 2010 Capitol City Showdown for the Governor’s Cup.
Teams skated at four Lansing area arenas, including Suburban Ice East Lansing, Munn Ice Arena, The Summit at the Capital Centre and Washington Park.
The Governor’s Cup is one of the biggest amateur tournaments in the state and included twelve divisions from Mite B to Bantam AA. Six of the 12 championship games were decided by two goals or less. Two finals went into overtime and one was decided in a shootout.
“We knew a lot of the top teams signed up to compete in this tournament,” said Ken Bayne, the coach of the Pee Wee AA Saginaw Badgers team. “Every team was a threat to win it all.”
Of the twelve championship teams, eleven were from Michigan, Including five local Lansing teams. The lone out-of-state team to win a title hailed from Winnetka, Illinois.
“It’s really something they look forward to, our kids mark it on the schedule and they are very excited about it a month ahead of time,” he said.
The size and logistics of the Capitol City Showdown meant months of planning but in the end all the hard work was worth it.
"We were excited to host so many teams in their quest for the Governor's Cup," said Suburban Ice East Lansing general manager Jeff Mitchell. "The competition and sportsmanship on the ice was outstanding and we are already looking forward to next year."
In addition to the spirited competition on the ice, some of the teams in the tournament were able to attend the Michigan State-Notre Dame game on Saturday night.
“We have been to several tournaments and this was a class act,” wrote Bryant Rappuhn of the Mite AA Bay County Blizzard. “We look forward to playing in it again next year.”
There were twelve division champions crowned at the 2010 Capitol City Showdown for the Governor’s Cup:
